1971 - President Nixon Declares Drug Abuse "Public Enemy Number One"

June 17, 1971: In a press conference, President Nixon declares drug abuse "public enemy number one." He announces the creation of a special action office for drug abuse prevention and requests $155 million to underwrite the effort, $105 million of which would be dedicated to treatment and rehabilitation.
